To UK travelers, Ryanair airline has announced changes to their hand luggage allowance for passengers travelling with them.
This is the first airline in the UK to charge for hand luggage, costing between £6 and £8 (2,843.38 and 3,791.17 naira respectively) depending on the option chosen. Passengers are only advised to take a small handbag with them for free which fits under a seat.
However, authorities are investigating the airline, as it believes it is “unfair commercial practice”, stating that hand luggage is ”an essential element when travelling.
In a statement, Ryanair’s Kenny Jacobs explained that the airline is looking forward to cooperating with authorities. He reiterated that Ryanair customers are free to bring one piece of carry-on bag onboard.
“But no airline customer has a right to unlimited carry-on bags. For safety reasons, most short-haul aircraft cannot accommodate two carry-on bags for each customer.”
The airline stated the hand luggage changes were not to make extra money. Instead, it was to speed up boarding following the previous changes which meant more people were taking suitcases to be put into the hold, resulting in delays.
